Curriculum-Reading

Reading teaches children about the world around them. Through reading, students learn about people, places and events outside their own experience. They are exposed to ways of life and ideas about the world which may be different from their immediate surroundings. This learning is important for our students in today's diverse environments.  It also builds a wealth of background knowledge which helps younger children to learn to read confidently.

Our goal is to help our children learn these materials at an earlier age and it includes the following:
- reading comprehension skills
- reading paragraphs
- listening skills
- high frequency words
- blending words
- word recognition

Reading List Recommendation

Reading should be a joy; not a source of stress or struggle. Each student's comfort level is different, so please use the following as a guide to choose books that work best for him or her. A rule of thumb to determine whether a book is appropriate for your child's reading level:
1) Make sure that his/her reading flows naturally;
2) He or she is not missing, guessing, or asking for help on more than five words per page;  and
3) He or she does not take more than three breaks or stops to figure out the meaning of words per page.
